The StageDoor Standard: Casting

StageDoor Community Theatre is a theatre education program. Our goal is to support students in developing confidence, responsibility, collaboration, and strong life skills alongside their theatrical growth.

How Casting Decisions Are Made

Casting decisions are thoughtful and intentional. We consider auditions alongside how students have shown up throughout their StageDoor journey, including their preparation, growth, reliability, how they treat others, and how they contribute to the rehearsal environment.

Auditions help us understand readiness and potential—not perfection.

Values We Honor Through Casting

Casting reflects the values we aim to teach both onstage and in life. We give strong consideration to students who demonstrate:

  • Preparation and reliability

  • Commitment to rehearsals and performances

  • Leadership and responsibility

  • Kindness, inclusivity, and respect for others

  • Collaboration and ensemble awareness

  • Openness to direction and learning from feedback

These qualities may be demonstrated during auditions and through participation in past StageDoor productions. How a student treats castmates, creative team members, volunteers, and others in our community is part of the overall picture we consider when casting.

What Matters in Auditions

During auditions, we look for:

  • How students take direction and apply feedback

  • Focus, presence, and preparation

  • Growth over time

  • How a student may support the ensemble

When casting decisions are close, we consider who is most prepared and dependable to take on the responsibility of a role and who will contribute positively to the experience of the full cast.

Attendance & Commitment

Because this is a tuition-based education program, commitment is essential.

  • Students who will miss any tech rehearsal or performance will not be considered for a lead role.

  • Tech week and all performances are mandatory.

  • Rehearsal attendance, consistency, and reliability factor into casting decisions.

Please share any known conflicts in your audition form so we can plan appropriately.

A Final Note

Casting decisions are made thoughtfully, with care for both individual growth and the needs of the full cast.

Our aim is for every student to feel supported, challenged, and proud of their growth as both a performer and a member of our community.
