As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend—almost—in this delightful midwinter night’s dream.

Classes will be announced March 14, 2012.

Summer is just around the corner, and StageDoor is pleased to offer several unique summer camps for kids K-12th grade. There are camps for everyone — for the aspiring performing arts student or those just starting out.

Our camps feature a blend of arts instruction and inventive camp activities including; acting, vocal production, choreography and dance; Shakespeare, stage combat, dialect training, improv and more. Camps will take place in June and July. Plan on your child joining us for a creative, one-of-a-kind week exploring the arts, developing skills and polishing natural abilities.

Summer Camp Classes

Staging Stories – (K-1st grade)

This mini-camp brings a different children’s story to life every day and turns it into a play – right before the young thespian’s eye. Students use their imaginations to create characters and tell stories, while learning basic acting skills. This camp supports creative development and encourages teamwork. Published author, Jon Jon Lannen (“The Giraffe That Taught Me How to Laugh”), joins students one day of camp to perform a special reading of his book and engage in talkback.

Cost: $85.00/session
Teacher: Sara Milbrath
Guest Teacher: Jon Jon Lannen

Session Date: July 9-13
10:00am-12:00 noon

Session Date: July 30-August 3
10:00am-12:00 noon

High School Camp – (9th-12th grade)

This camp is ideal for students passionate about theatre. It caters to the student looking to add to an existing skill set or wanting to explore theatre for the first time. Students are exposed to Shakespeare, Improv, stage combat, stage movement, vocal production, laban efforts, dialects, acting for the camera and more. Special guest, Sue Knudten, offers a unique opportunity for campers – she is teaching a one day workshop on acting for the camera and voice-over work. Another added bonus – students leave camp with auditioning skills, as well as a monologue suitable for high school, college and professional auditions. This advice provides direction for a potential college search and includes information regarding theatre programs in Colorado and across the country. You don’t have to be looking to make acting your major to enjoy this course – but if you are – this camp can give you an exciting head start.

Cost: $250.00
Teacher: Sara Milbrath
Guest Teacher: Sue Knudten

Session Date: July 16-20
10:00am-3:00pm
High School Camp Friends and Family Showcase – Saturday, July 21, 8:00pm

Improvisation Camp – (6th-8th and 9th-12th grade)

This camp exposes students to different forms of improvisation, with a focus on short form. Improv is a wonderful tool for the dramatic actor, as well as a great form of theatre for those interested in comedy. Students also receive a specialized lesson in long form improvisation. They learn to build characters and create relationships and conflict, all from the organic eye of the actor. The skills learned in this camp are showcased in a full-length (90 minute) show for friends and family. This camp is a lot of fun and gives students valuable tools to perform both on stage and off. One day of camp, a special guest speaker introduces campers to the world of stand-up comedy, including pointers and how to get started.

Cost: $125.00/session
Teacher: Sara Milbrath
Guest Teachers: Mara Wiles, Brian McManus

Improv Camp Friends and Family Show – Saturday, July 30, 8:00pm

Session Date: July 23-27

This unique camp takes creativity to the next level. Students are given the opportunity to imagine, write and perform a “fractured fairy tale.” Students choose to either combine two fairy tales together, or set an existing tale in another place. Using improvisation, vocal production, stage movement and acting exercises, they learn to develop a well rounded character who graces the stage in a final performance the last hour of class. Will Snow White meet Sleeping Beauty, or will Alice visit Mall Land? Find out in this wildly imaginative camp facilitating creativity, confidence and fun.

An open letter from the head of props for Hello, Dolly!

Hello friends of StageDoor!

As most of you know, it takes quite a bit to put on the amazing shows at StageDoor Theatre – including making & gathering costumes and props for each show. Due to budget constraints, StageDoor typically tries to make, borrow, or acquire donated items.

As the high school cast works hard at learning their lines & dance steps for the musical “Hello, Dolly!” in October & November, we are in search of MANY items for props, & could use your help.

If you are willing to lend or donate any of the items listed below – please let me know! These are just a small portion of the props we need, & if we can find these, we can spend more time making & searching for our other items.

“Hello, Dolly!” is set in 1895, & we are looking for items to fit that era, or altered to look like they do.

Walking canes for men – need at least 3 more

Old luggage/suitcases- leather – need at least 4 pieces

Black combs

Black & white newspapers (no color!)

Wire spools (without the wire) – approximately 15 inches in diameter

Hat boxes

Old fashioned broom – with natural material

About the show

Hello, Dolly! is one of Broadway’s most successful shows, running for 2,844 performances from January 16, 1964 to December 27, 1970 and winning 10 Tony Awards, a record that remained unbroken for 37 years.

The story takes place when the irrepressible matchmaker Dolly Gallagher Levi is hired to arrange a marriage for the miserly half-millionaire Horace Vandergelder and she finds him the perfect mate – herself! But first she must win the heart of her unsuspecting “husband to be” before he gets hitched to somebody else. This beloved family musical is a delectable treat for musical theatre lovers of all ages, brimming with joyful tunes such as “Before the Parade Passes By,” “It Only Takes a Moment,” and of course, “Hello, Dolly!” The show features music and Lyrics by Jerry Herman, book by Michael Stewart and based on the play “The Matchmaker” by Thornton Wilder.

Optional acting classes will be held from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Tuesdays for no additional fee to registered students.

Tech Week Dates: October 22nd & 23rd from 1:00 PM – 7:00 PM; October 24th & 25th from 4:30 PM – 9:30 PM, October 26th & 27th 4:00 PM – 10:00 PM

What is Tech Week?

Tech week is the week prior to the show opening. It is an intensive week of rehearsals during which all light cues are set, as well as the movement of all set pieces between scenes. This is the week that the whole show comes together and is critical to the success of the performance. Attendance is extremely important!
While we work very hard to finish rehearsal on time, due to the nature of tech week, it is possible that rehearsal will run late. If your student is relying on someone to pick them up for a ride home, please wait for a phone call indicating that rehearsal is over so you aren’t kept waiting. Students who are involved in other extra-curricular activities during this week will need to miss those activities during this one week, so they can be present. We suggest that students bring plenty of snacks and water to keep their energy level high during this busy week.

Tuition

$105 per month, due the first of August, September, October, November & December. Payments are spread over 5 months to make it easier on family budgets. Students will need to provide their own shoes, socks, tights, hair care products, and make-up. Save 10% and pay in full by August 1st. Discounted amount is $472.50. If you choose this option and your student decides not to continue with the production, and you request a refund, a $10 processing fee will be charged. Of course exceptions may be made in the case of hardship.

View StageDoor Theatre’s complete tuition policy here.

Attendance

Theatre is a collaborative effort. Cast members rely heavily on each other, so it is important that all members of the group be present whenever possible. Please check the calendar carefully and only register for this production if you can commit to the rehearsal, tech week, and performance schedule. ATTENDANCE DURING TECH WEEK AND ALL PERFORMANCE DATES IS MANDATORY! If you know you have a conflict with a regular rehearsal, you must request to be excused from rehearsal by notifying the director(s) two weeks in advance, in writing. In case of illness, please call the director as soon as possible. No credits are given for missed classes, as StageDoor still incurs the cost associated with the class. In the event of excessive unexcused absences, you may be replaced and no credit given for tuition paid. Students should come to rehearsal prepared and with the following items: script, notepad and pencil, dance or tennis shoes (no thick soles please), appropriate rehearsal attire.
